II.SENIOR SCIENTISTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
AFORNET is also inviting African tree and forest scientists to submit multi-disciplinary and transnational research proposals that fall under one of the following thematic areas:
  • Woodland, Natural Forests and Biodiversity Conservation;
  • Community-Based Forestry;
  • Reforestation and Rehabilitation of Degraded and Arid Lands;

  • Socio-Economics and Policy Issues; and
  • Non-Timber Forest Products and Lesser Known Timber.

    Eligibility

  • Grants are open to teams of senior scientists who are willing to undertake collaborative and transnational research in Africa. There is no age limit for the applicants to the Senior Scientists’ Fellowship Program.

    Grant terms

    Grants for research may be awarded for up to three years. Project budget may include the following: purchase of equipment, field data collection and management expenses, travel, per diem for field work, and workshops. Salary and basic research facilities are to be provided by the host institution of each research team member. The total grant request should not exceed US$80,000 per project. Research teams from different disciplinary backgrounds must come from at least two countries.

    How to apply

    The application package should include a filled in grant application form, a research concept note or proposal and the current CV’s of each applicant. Grant application form is available in English and French (both in electronic form and hard copy) from the AFORNET secretariat, the Nodal Coordinator for your eco-region, or the AFORNET web site.
    Applicants are encouraged to first submit a concept note on the intended research not exceeding 5 pages indicating the objectives, justification, methodology for the study, work plan and budget, and collaborators and their roles. Reference to key literature should be made.
    However, direct submission of a full research proposal is also possible and it should include:
  • Project title, names addresses, and institutions of the principal investigator and collaborators;
  • A project summary not exceeding 500 words;
  • A project description of maximum 15 pages including a logical framework;
  • A detailed budget (detailing request from AFORNET and costs that would be borne from other sources), and
  • A clear statement on the division of responsibilities and resources among the collaborating scientists.
  • Deadlines
    The closing dates for submission of applications and proposals are 31st March and 30th September of each year.
